Matt’s actions in his final week have been much debated in the halls of Reality News Online, on Twitter, around water coolers, and who knows where else. In this interview, Matt himself weighs in on those matters. Why didn’t he reveal the Brigade to Britney? Why did he stay with the Brigade when they seemed to make it clear he was low man on the totem pole? Could he have done anything differently to save himself? Matt addresses all of this and more!
When Matt was voted out, some folks thought he could have done things differently at the end to convince Britney to keep him around. I, for one, didn’t. Whose side did Matt come down on? What did he have to say for himself? Read on to find out!
Reality News Online: Hello, Matt, and thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for the readers at Reality News Online! I was rooting for you! (Partially because I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and partially because of the way you were playing.) But what do you think overall viewer opinion of you has been, including public reaction to your lie about your wife’s supposed illness?
Matt: Thanks, David! I think the public reaction to me is horrible. I can’t imagine overall that the public reaction to me is well-liked, primarily due to the lie about my wife. There are two ways to look at it. I’m a scumbag who exploits my wife. Or, I’m a good guy that wants to bring awareness to a much unknown disease. But I think people don’t like me. I don’t really care, though.
RNO: How do you think your fellow houseguests will react when they find out about your wife?
Matt: The fellow houseguests will be very upset. Maybe disappointed is a better word and they should be. I hope over time they will get over it and we can be friends.
RNO: Moving on to more strategic matters, I write a weekly column about why each player lost. I know you’re a strategic thinker, so let me ask you this: Why do YOU think you lost?
Matt: I lost because I backed out on my own personal strategy of competing. Had I competed in that last HOH, I would have won it and then I would not have been taken out. I also maybe got in a little too deep with Ragan, my side alliance, and that caused suspicion within the Brigade.
RNO: Julie asked you why you threw the most recent HOH competition and you indicated it was because you thought you were safe. But why did you think you were safe, given that the Brigade had pretty well told you that you were the odd man out?
Matt: The Brigade told me that I was the odd man out only in the situation that two Brigade members were on the block. I really thought Brendon was going home and then when he won the POV I had suspicions that the end was near for me.
RNO: Julie also asked you why you immediately rejoined with the Brigade this week and you said you were kind of straddling both alliances. Can you explain that, given that we were coming to the end and at this point you pretty much had to make a choice?
Matt: This was the choosing week and unfortunately I didn’t survive it. I would have jumped shipped if a Brigade member went home, but if all Brigades were still there I would have stuck with them.
RNO: Do you think you could have gotten Britney to nominate somebody else if you’d have told her about the Brigade?
Matt: If I told Britney about the Brigade, then the other three Brigade members would have been so angry that they would have denied it. It would have been three to one and no one would have believed me. It wouldn’t have worked.
RNO: Following up, was there any way you think you could have escaped this week (other than winning HOH or Veto, of course)?
Matt: Absolutely not. I had to win the competitions. Brendon not winning veto would have also worked. He was the target but he won POV.
RNO: When you were nominated and evicted, why did you leave quietly instead of revealing the secret of the Brigade?
Matt: Because I’m not a bad person and there is no reason to ruin other people’s game when yours is over. I didn’t want to ruin them. I think it will be fun to see if they can make it to final three even though I don’t want them to.
RNO: Who do you think is playing the best game right now?
Matt: Enzo is playing the best game. He will probably make it to the final two but I don’t think he can win. I think Ragan has the best chance of winning.
RNO: Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about your time in the Big Brother house?
Matt: It is much harder than it appears on television, mentally. I would encourage all fans of the show to apply because it is an incredible experience.
RNO: Thanks again, Matt!
